Hospital Orientation Program

On commencement, all staff are provided with a thorough introduction to the area or department where they will be employed.

All new staff are also required to attend the hospital orientation program. This program, which is supported by our executive team, includes a number of compulsory education sessions including:
• Basic Life Support
• Fire and Emergency Training
• Manual Handling
• Infection Control 
• Medication competency (for nursing staff)

Internal Training Programs

Throughout the year, we provide a range of internal training programs including compulsory programs. This ensures our staff are kept up to date.

External Education

Staff are encouraged to maintain and upgrade their qualifications. Opportunities exist for sponsorship to external conferences and study days. Staff can apply for funding to assist in these areas.

Graduate Registered Nurse Program

Toronto Private conducts a New Graduate Nurse Program. The program provides an environment in which newly registered nurses can develop and consolidate nursing, management and organisational skills.


  • Comprehensive hospital and clinical orientation
  • Ward-specific in-service training
  • Clinical study days
  • Core competency assessment
  • Access to nursing seminars, workshops and continuing education
  • Support by clinical nurse specialists and preceptors
  • Opportunities for continuing employment on completion of the program
  • Opportunity to rotate through several specialty areas during the program including:
  • Rehabilitation
  • General medicine and palliative care


Non-clinical staff are provided with opportunities to undertake traineeships in areas of interest such as maintenance, administration, catering and housekeeping.

All traineeships are fully funded and operated by TAFE NSW or registered training companies. All trainees are supported by experienced staff.

Management Development Program

Toronto Private Hospital’s clinical and non-clinical managers have access to management development training opportunities.

University Placements

Regular clinical placements across a wide range of health disciplines are offered to students from Newcastle University, Sydney University, and other universities across the State.

With formal clinical placement agreements, students are fully supported by experienced clinical nurse specialists, medical and allied health staff.

Students are provided valuable learning experiences across all specialities.
